In emerging market economies, social entrepreneurs are catalytic in improving the lives of marginalized populations by using market-driven strategies to drive positive social change. In this session with EWB Kumvana Fellow Nafisa Rafiatu Adams, learn about her journey starting and operating Detiina, a social enterprise in Ghana. Detiina employs women in underprivileged communities in Ghana to make beautiful handcrafted jewelry, training new women and giving them startup kits and then producing and selling the jewelry. The profits gained from selling the jewelry gets invested into the community by providing an education for the children in need and operating a micro-loan program. The women employed were previously her community’s most vulnerable: rescued child brides, teenage mothers, and girls engaged in child prostitution. In this Q & A style session, ask Nafisa about the challenges and opportunities of being a social entrepreneur in Ghana.
